Smelson's COVID-19 Summary 4.3.2020

Once again, I watch it so you don’t have to. Updates for 4/3/2020
News throughout the day summarized with a little salt added and capped off with the White House address.
Beginning of the day US counts 4/2/2020 – Cases – 245,573 Deaths – 6,058
Cuomo – NY had it’s largest increase in deaths in the last 24 hours. The curve is still not heading down. Requests that any company that is capable of making PPE make them, specifically gowns and N95 masks. Javitz was originally setup for non-COVID-19 patients. It is now being converted to handle COVID-19. FEMA was not eager to do that, but the demand for this required it. Trump approved it.
Says they still don’t have enough ventilators. Says the Fed is being as helpful as they can, but they don’t have enough to do the job. The National Guard will be deployed to pick up ventilators from hospitals across the state to get them where they need to be.
The NY budget has been passed so that spending is based on revenue that does/doesn’t come in as they are broke right now. Speaker Pelosi is working on funding for state governments in the next bill.
Trump presser – praises first responders and Governor of NY and other states. Says he won’t be following CDC recommendations and wearing a mask. The number of people killed by the flu is very substantial. Mentions it is voluntary to wear a mask but he’s probably not going to do it.
Blue Cross/Blue Shield will waive co-pays for C19 related medical services. He’s invoking the DPA to prevent export of PPE. Goes into numbers of PPE. Keeps going into numbers. We are in a war with an invisible enemy. Remember, we’re in a war.
Talks about all of the CEOs he spoke with regarding oil production.
We’ll see some bad things, then we’ll see some very good things.
Pence – CA and WA remain at a steady but low rate. They’re not out of the woods yet, but it seems the mitigation is working. 1.4 million tests have been performed. (That’s .004375 of our population.) He urges us to Keep On Keepin’ On.
Birx – going to look at the epidemiology of the individual outbreaks and move equipment where it’s needed. (Sounds like they took a page from Cuomo’s playbook)
Trump – calls someone fake news for asking about Fauci. The previous administration, the shelves were empty. Reporter picks at the scab – if you knew we were going to have a pandemic why weren’t you prepared? You should go to the previous administration and ask them. Goes into how the military had no ammunition. Talks about how he saved the people on the cruise ship. He made the decision to take them in. Says the governors are giving political answers and accusing the fed of not giving them what they are requesting. When a reporter asks what Jared Kushner meant by, “The stockpile is ours, not the states.” She was attacked and told she should be ashamed of herself. Says the states are using 40 year-old computers and he wanted to send the checks direct, but the democrats wanted to use the 40 year-old computers.
Insurance markets are re-opened for people who became unemployed and lost their insurance.
Very contentious press conference overall. Last question as he was running out that didn’t get answered had to do with the website for the national stockpile of health-care items changing to last night to match the description Jared Kushner made in yesterday’s press conference. Read about that here: Stockpile
Closing numbers for 4/3/2020 – Cases – 273,880 Deaths – 7,077
Once again, thank you for reading. Do not take anything written here as gospel and certainly don’t make any financial decisions based from the information provided. Stay as tuned-in as you can. Support your local businesses as much as you can. Lastly, #staythefuckhome
